The Liberty softball team experienced a record-breaking season in 2017, culminating in mid-May when the Lady Flames claimed the inaugural Postseason National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) title. Freshman twins Amber and Autumn Bishop proved to be a driving force for the Lady Flames this season.
LFSN Game On recently featured the Bishop twins, providing an inside story on their backgrounds and how they ended up at Liberty. Interviews with Amber and Autumn, along with Head Coach Dot Richardson, allow fans to get to know the Bishop sisters better.
Amber Bishop batted .373 as a freshman, setting program freshman records for hits (85), runs scored (55), homers (15) and RBI (66). She was named the freshman of the year by both the Big South and VaSID while also making the Top 25 watch list for the NFCA National Freshman of the Year. Autumn Bishop hit .381 on the season with 15 doubles, 41 runs scored and a team-leading .473 on-base percentage. Both Bishop sisters were voted to the Big South All-Conference and VaSID All-State first team. Autumn was tabbed to the NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team, while Amber received third-team all-region honors.
Liberty won the Big South regular-season title, tying a program record with 16 conference wins (16-5), while posting a program-record 46 overall victories (46-24). The Lady Flames set team single-season records in nearly every offensive category. The team also set a new program record with a 13-game winning streak in March. The Lady Flames capped off the season with their first postseason championship, winning five straight elimination games in the Championship Round to win the NISC title.
