Kenzie Friesen tossed her fourth shutout of the season, a one-hitter, against Illinois State.
Liberty scored three third-inning runs, backing a one-hit shutout by Kenzie Friesen in a 3-0 victory over Illinois State, Monday at Liberty Softball Stadium.
The Lady Flames (42-24) eliminated the Redbirds (33-24) from the NISC Championship Round. Liberty advances to another elimination game, taking on the winner of Cal Poly vs. Weber State at 9 p.m. tonight.
Liberty set a program record with its 42nd win of the season, surpassing the 1999 (41-25) and 2006 (41-23) teams.
For the game, Liberty outhit Illinois State, 8-1, while both teams recorded one error.
Friesen (14-3) earned her fourth shutout of the season, the 17th blanking by the Lady Flames this year. The redshirt senior allowed just one hit, striking out three and walking one, improving to 3-0 in NISC play.
Ali Domkuski (5-9) drew the loss, allowing three unearned runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out two in five innings of work. Sarah Finck tossed two innings of hitless relief.
Alexia Taylor led Liberty, batting 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Deidra See went 2-for-3 with a double, while Amber Bishop hit 2-for-4 and scored once.
The Bishop twins both reached base to start the game, with Autumn drawing a walk and Amber hitting an infield single. However, Autumn was picked off of second. Tori Zavodny reached on a fielder's choice, and was caught stealing for the third out.
Taylor lined a single to left center to lead off the second. Sarah Robertson then sacrificed her to second. Domkuski retired the next two batters, stranding Taylor at second.
The Lady Flames broke through with a two-out rally in the top of the third. After two outs, Autumn Bishop drew a walk and Amber Bishop singled to left. Two runs scored when Zavodny reached on a throwing error. Then, Taylor made it 3-0 with an RBI double to right center.
See opened the fourth inning with a single to left center, but the next three batters grounded out.
Allison Spence singled to left with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, giving Illinois State its only hit of the game. Riley Strandgard then grounded out to short, bringing the inning to a close.
Zavodny and Taylor hit back-to-back two-out singles during the fifth inning, putting runners on second and third. Robertson then grounded to the pitcher, ending Liberty's threat.
Finck came in for Domkuski after See hit a leadoff double in the sixth. The ISU right-hander set down the next three batters in order.
A two-base error with two outs in the sixth gave the Redbirds life. However, Jordan de los Reyes popped out to short, sending the game to the final inning.
Friesen finished off the shutout, inducing three straight flyouts to right field in the bottom of the seventh.
