Longwood sophomore Sydney Gay tossed a four-hit shutout, as the Lancers blanked Liberty, 3-0, during game two of a doubleheader, Wednesday at Liberty Softball Stadium. Longwood (21-26, 10-8 Big South) won two out of the three games in this week's series. Liberty (35-20, 16-5) has clinched at least a tie of its fourth Big South regular-season title in program history and first since 2007, with its 7-6 win earlier today. The Lady Flames also tied the 2016 team for the most Big South victories in a single season.
Gay (12-13) allowed just four hits, striking out five while registering her fourth shutout of the season.
Kenzie Friesen (11-2) drew the loss, her first setback since March 4 against College of Charleston. She yielded three runs on six hits, walking four and striking out one.
Longwood's Justine Augustine went 2-for-3, while Karleigh Donovan batted 2-for-2 with two RBI. Destiny Martinez went 1-for-1 with two runs scored.
Sarah Robertson went 2-for-3 for Liberty, while Tori Zavodny batted 1-for-3 and Channing Cox hit 1-for-1.
The Lancers left two runners on base to end both the first and second innings, as Friesen worked through jams to keep the game scoreless.
Liberty staged a rally in the bottom of the third, as Jasmeen Click reached on an error and Zavodny singled. Gay then got the Bishop twins, Amber and Autumn, to pop out and ground out to end the scoring threat.
Longwood went ahead, manufacturing a run in the top of the fifth. Martinez hit a leadoff single, before Friesen hit Augustine with a pitch. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out. Donovan then flied out to left, plating Martinez for a 1-0 lead.
Pinch hitter Channing Cox led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and went to second on a throwing error. However, Click grounded out to short, with Cox being erased by a strong throw from first baseman Kasey Carr to Krista Kelly at third. Gay then struck out Zavodny.
The visitors tacked on two seventh-inning insurance runs. Martinez drew a leadoff walk before Augustine singled to right center. A pair of wild pitches sent Martinez home and Augustine to third. Donovan later made it 3-0 with an RBI single to right.
Gay hit Jaclyn Amader with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but retired the final two batters to close out the 3-0 shutout.
The Lady Flames have wrapped up their regular-season schedule. They will await seeding for the 2017 Big South Softball Championship, which will be hosted by Longwood from May 10-13. Seeding will be announced on Sunday, May 7.
