No. 49 Liberty wrapped up regular season play for 2016-17 on Saturday, finishing tied for fifth place at The Maxwell.
The 54-hole event, hosted by No. 13 Oklahoma, served as Liberty's final event before the 2017 Big South Men's Golf Championship, where the Flames will look to defend their title and claim the program's fifth championship in seven seasons.
Liberty finished the two-day tournament firing a 31-over par 871 (285-298-288), which was contested on the East Course at the Oak Tree Golf Club (par 70, 7,102 yards).
The tournament utilized a unique format where all five golfers from each team played in a pairing together, as compared to the normal college format that features threesomes with golfers from three different teams.
No. 2 Oklahoma State cruised to a six-shot victory, posting a winning score of 9-over par 849 (280-287-282).
No. 48 New Mexico (280-289-286) and tournament host Oklahoma (283-288-284) shared second place with a 15-over par 855.
No. 3 Baylor finished in solo fourth place with a 30-over over par 870 (285-294-291), one shot ahead of the Flames and UCLA (301-286-284).
Overnight leader Hidetoshi Yoshihara of UCLA posted an even par 70 on Saturday and finished as the event's individual medalist with a 1-under par 209 (73-66-70). He finished one stroke ahead of Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland (71-69-70-210) and two shots clear of Baylor's Matthew Perrine (68-72-71-211).
Liberty's Kieran Vincent finished in a four-way tie for sixth place, carding a 3-over par 213 (67-75-71). The freshman offset four bogeys during the final round with three birdies, giving him 11 birdies during the tournament.
Mickey DeMorat looked like he might finish as Liberty's top golfer in the event, as the junior moved to 6-under par on the day with a birdie on the par-4, No. 15 hole (431 yards). However, he bogeyed his final three holes and finished tied for 14th with a 5-over par 215 (71-77-67).
Isaiah Logue finished tied for 42nd place with a 13-over par 223 (72-76-75). The junior managed to record one birdie on Saturday, birdying the par-5, No. 12 hole (562 yards) for the third time during the event.
Payton Taylor finished tied for 54th place with a 15-over par 225 (75-73-77), which included four final round birdies. Gabe Lench finished one stroke behind Taylor and shared 58th place with a 16-over par 226 (77-74-75).
The Flames return to the golf course on Friday when they look to defend their conference title at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C., the site of Liberty's four other conference championships The victor of the three-day, 54-hole event will capture the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Liberty has advanced to NCAA Regional play five out of the last six seasons, four times as Big South champions (2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016) and once as an at-large selection (2013).
