Liberty shut out Virginia for the second night in a row, as Kenzie Friesen tossed a two-hitter to help Liberty to a 3-0 victory, Wednesday at The Park.
Liberty (28-16) extends its winning streak to a season-high nine games, while tying a program record with its fifth shutout in a row. The Lady Flames have held their opponents scoreless for 35 2/3 consecutive innings. This is the first time in program history that Liberty has swept the season series from Virginia (14-28). Liberty is 4-0 against ACC opponents this season.
Friesen (11-1) tossed her third shutout of the season and fifth of her career, yielding just two hits while walking four and striking out one. She has not allowed a run in her last 20 innings pitched.
Erika Osherow (9-16) drew the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on nine hits, striking out six and walking two.
Emily Sweat went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI, while Sarah Robertson batted 2-for-4 with one run scored.
For Virginia, Katie Park went 1-for-1, while Danni Ingraham batted 1-for-3.
The Cavaliers loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first, on walks to Allison Davis and Kaitlin Fitzgerald and a Park single. Friesen escaped the jam, getting a 1-2-3 double play and a popout to first.
Osherow kept the Lady Flames without a hit until Robertson sent a one-out single to right in the fourth inning. Alexia Taylor followed with a single to left. Sweat grounded out to first, pushing the runners ahead. Liberty took advantage of a dropped foul ball, as See hit the next pitch for an infield single, scoring Robertson and Taylor for a 2-0 lead.
Ingraham led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left. However, McKall Miller then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play and Madison Labshere grounded to second for the third out.
Liberty threatened to add to its lead in the sixth inning. Sweat doubled with one out before See reached on a fielder's choice. A walk to Taylor Hoffman gave the Lady Flames the bases loaded with one out. Kaitlin McFarland then hit a grounder to second baseman Ashlee Davis, who threw Sweat out at the plate. Jasmeen Click lofted a popup behind third base which shortstop Labshere snared to keep the score at 2-0.
The Lady Flames scored a seventh-inning insurance run. Amber Bishop and Robertson hit back-to-back singles with one out. Sweat then came through with an RBI single, before being thrown out at second.
Friesen tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning, wrapping up the shutout victory.
Liberty returns to Big South play this weekend, heading to Boiling Springs, N.C., for a three-game set at Gardner-Webb, Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Lady Flames and Runnin' Bulldogs will contest at single game at 5 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
