Complete Double Decathlon Results

Many college cross country coaches would relish a weekend off from competition in the middle of the season, perhaps doing some yard work and watching college football. Not so for 57-year-old Liberty head cross country/track & field coach Brant Tolsma, who set an age-group world record for the one-day double decathlon, Saturday at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.

Tolsma posted an age-adjusted score of 11,909 points for the 20-event competition, which began with the 100-meter dash at 9 a.m., and wrapped up with the conclusion of the 10,000-meter run, around 9:25 p.m. Tolsma already held the world record for the two-day double decathlon in the 55-59 age category.

Justin Bishop won the open division and established a new American record with 9,817 points, edging 2007 Liberty graduate Travis Campbell, who accumulated 9,799 markers. Flames assistant cross country/track & field coach Greg Jimmerson finished third, with 9,431 points. Saturday's final finisher out of the six men who started the day was 43-year-old Rob Lawson, who set his age group's (40-44) world record, with 9,301 points.

The five athletes completed 12 running events totaling 15.5 miles, four jumping events and four throwing events. In order, the day's program consisted of the 100-meter dash, long jump, 200-meter hurdles, shot put, 5,000-meter run, 800-meter run, high jump, 400-meter dash, hammer, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 110-meter hurdles, discus, 200-meter dash, pole vault, 3,000-meter run, 400-meter hurdles, javelin, 1,500-meter run, triple jump and the 10,000-meter run.
