Liberty Posts 2nd Straight Shutout of PC, 4-0

Liberty took the first game of a doubleheader from Presbyterian, 4-0, Saturday at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium, tossing its second shutout in a row.

With the win, Liberty (25-16, 9-2 Big South) runs its winning streak to six games. The Lady Flames have not allowed a run in the last 16 2/3 innings, dating to game two against Hampton, Tuesday. PC falls to 14-26, 3-8 in Big South play.

Julia DiMartino (9-6) tossed a four-hit shutout, her third shutout of the season and 10th of her career. She struck out a season-high 12 batters, one shy of her career high, while walking two.

Alex Cook (4-10) drew the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four.

Tori Zavodny went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Deidra See batted 2-for-3, while Amber Bishop hit 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Four different Blue Hose batters recorded one hit apiece, with Rebekka Gross hitting a double and Kelsie Sanchez tripling.

Both pitchers were on their game early, with the first hit of the game coming in the third inning. DiMartino struck out five straight batters before Gross dropped a one-out double in to right field, going to third on a throwing error. DiMartino kept the game scoreless, fanning the next two batters.

Liberty plated three runs in the bottom of the third. See led off with an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt, Jasmeen Click singled to put runners on the corners. Zavodny then roped a two-run triple to left center for a 2-0 Liberty lead. Bishop then reached on an error and Zavodny scored. Cook escaped further damage, getting a lineout and a fielder's choice.

Hope Rogers and Megan Anderson hit back-to-back singles to start the fourth. DiMartino set down the next three batters in a row, keeping the shutout intact.

DiMartino pitched around a two-out triple by Kelsie Sanchez in the fifth, striking out Rogers for the third out.

Liberty rallied with two outs to score an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Zavodny hit a two-out single, and made it to third on a wild pitch. Bishop then lined a sharp single to left, making it 4-0.

A walk and a fielding error gave PC two sixth-inning baserunners with two outs. However, DiMartino fanned Harris to maintain the four-run lead.

The Liberty right-hander posted one more strikeout during a four-batter seventh inning, wrapping up the shutout win.
