Deidra See hit her second homer of the season, Tuesday against North Carolina A&T.
Liberty hit a season-high three home runs in support of Chase Cassady's four-hit shutout, as the Lady Flames downed North Carolina A&T, 10-0, in five innings, Tuesday at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium. With the victory, Liberty (13-12) extends its winning streak to three games. During its six-game homestand, Liberty averaged 8.5 runs per game. The Aggies fall to 7-16-1 on the season.
Cassady (4-5) allowed just four hits, striking out nine in tossing a complete-game shutout. It was her third career shutout and second of the season.
Mohagony Headen (2-8) drew the loss, giving up 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits, while striking out one and walking two.
Tori Zavodny batted 2-for-3 with a triple, home run, three RBI and two runs scored. She is now tied with Shannon McKain (2005-08) for fourth in program history with nine career triples. Deidra See went 1-for-1 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Autumn Bishop and Alexia Taylor both batted 1-for-3, with Bishop homering and Taylor hitting a triple.
For North Carolina A&T, Lauren Dunlow hit two doubles in as many at bats.
Liberty struck right away, as Bishop led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to right field.
The Lady Flames added to their advantage in the second, thanks to an error by the Aggies. Emily Sweat singled to lead off the inning, and See drew a walk. Sweat and See both scored when Jasmeen Click reached on a throwing error. Headen got out of the inning with a popout and groundout.
Cassady had her strikeout game going early on, striking out eight batters in the first three innings. She pitched through trouble in the third, as Dunlow hit a one-out double and Zadia Davis reached on an error. Cassady then fanned Raven Gray for the third out.
Zavodny tripled to start the home half of the third, before scoring on a wild pitch to make it 4-0, Liberty. Headen then retired the next three batters.
Liberty broke the game wide open with a six-run fourth inning, as the leadoff batter reached base and scored for the fourth frame in a row. Hoffman singled to lead off, before See lined a homer to left center. Click hit an infield single and Amber Bishop walked, setting the table for Zavodny's towering three-run blast to right. Taylor then tripled off the wall in right before scoring on an RBI single by Robertson for a 10-0 lead.
North Carolina A&T threatened to break up the shutout in the fifth, as Talisha Jenkins was hit by a pitch and Dunlow follow with a double. Davis struck out, but reached first on an error, loading the bases with one out. Gray then grounded to short, with the throw to the plate erasing Jenkins. Cassady completed the shutout, getting Jillian Nobles to foul out.
The Lady Flames open Big South play this weekend, competing at Charleston Southern in a three-game series, Friday and Saturday. Liberty and CSU will meet for a single game, Friday at 3 p.m. before contesting a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., Saturday at CSU Softball Field.
