Lady Flames Overpower Rhode Island, 15-5

Liberty used a 10-run second inning to run away from the visiting Rhode Island Rams, 15-5, in five innings on Thursday at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.

The Lady Flames (10-10) snapped a five-game winless streak, winning their home opener for the third year in a row. The Rams fall to 1-10, including 0-1 at the Liberty Softball Classic.

Liberty's 15 runs were its most since a 15-4 win at Charleston Southern, April 7, 2013.

On the afternoon, Liberty scored a season-high 15 runs, with every Lady Flame in the batting order scoring at least one run. The Lady Flames also drew a season-high 11 walks

Jasmeen Click batted 2-for-2 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Alexia Taylor went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, while Amber Bishop hit 2-for-3. Deidra See went 1-for-2 with a homer and three RBI. Autumn Bishop and Tori Zavodny both hit an RBI double.

For Rhode Island, Paige Juilch went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Kylie Shivery hit 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Kenzie Friesen (4-1) earned the win, allowing five unearned runs on two hits, walking two and striking out two in three innings pitched. Julia DiMartino pitched the final two innings, fanning four and walking one while yielding no hits.

Becca Rogers (1-5) drew the loss, giving up seven runs on five hits in one inning, walking five and striking out one.  Three relievers combined to pitch the last three innings.

The Rams got on the board first, scoring two unearned runs in the first inning. Ali Summers was hit by a pitch, and Caileigh Holland walked. Summers then scored on an error, and Holland scored on a fielder's choice for a 2-0 lead.

Liberty loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first, but left them loaded when Jaclyn Amader struck out.

After a 1-2-3 Rhode Island second, the Lady Flames burst ahead by scoring 10 runs on five hits, benefitting from one Ram error in the frame. See tied the game with a two-run blast to left center. Rogers tossed two bases-loaded walks, and was relieved by Madi Lewis. Lewis gave up RBI singles to Taylor and Amader, walking in another run. After an error made it 9-2, Julia Waraksy entered the circle. Her wild pitch gave Liberty a 10-2 lead before a lineout and flyout ended the inning.

Rhode Island scored three times in the top of the third. With one out, Holland walked, before Melanie Martire reached on a fielding error. A single by Kylie Shivery loaded the bases. The Rams pushed across three runs, with the last two coming on a two-run double by Julich.

DiMartino came on in relief of Friesen in the fourth inning, pitching a scoreless frame.

The Lady Flames put the game out of reach in the home half of the fourth. Autumn Bishop lined a two-run double, bringing Andrea Chiaradio into the circle for URI. Zavodny and Taylor hit back-to-back RBI doubles off of Chiaradio, good for a 10-run advantage.

DiMartino hit the first batter she faced in the fifth, but closed out the run-rule victory with a pair of strikeouts.
