Golf Heads Back to Sunshine State for Gator Invitational

SunTrust Gator Invitational Live Stats

One of the strongest fields the Flames will face during the regular season awaits Liberty this weekend at the 2017 SunTrust Gator Invitational.

Liberty, ranked No. 31 in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings, is one of nine top 50 ranked teams in the 15-team field. Additionally, 14 of the 15 teams at the Florida-hosted event are currently ranked inside the latest top 100 team rankings.

The star-studded field will take to the Mark Bostick Golf Course (par 70, 6,701 yards) for 36 holes of action on Saturday, followed by a final 18 holes of play on Sunday.

The top 50 teams in the field include: Florida (No. 2), Wake Forest (No. 12), Arkansas (No. 29), Florida State (No. 30), Liberty (No. 31), North Florida (No. 33), Missouri (No. 35), Jacksonville (No. 38) and College of Charleston (No. 44).

Liberty is familiar with several of the top 50 teams in the field, having squared off against five of them at the Sea Best Invitational, last Monday and Tuesday, in Jacksonville, Fla.

No. 2 Florida won the tournament with a 4-under par 836, with Liberty finishing in third place with a 9-over par 849 and ahead of the four other top 50 teams.

No. 29 Arkansas took fourth with a 13-over par 853, followed by No. 38 Jacksonville (sixth place; 17-over par 857), No. 30 Florida State (tied for seventh place; 18-over par 858) and No. 33 North Florida (tied for seventh place; 18-over par 858).

The Flames are no stranger to Florida's on-campus golf course, having participated in this event the last five seasons. Liberty's best showing at this event during the last five years was a sixth-place finish in 2012 and 2016.

Last year, Liberty carded a 7-over par 847 (294-280-273), finishing 29 strokes behind tournament victor USF's 22-under par 818 (282-260-267).

During last year's tournament, Mickey DeMorat led the Flames, finishing tied for third place with an 8-under par 202 (70-66-66). The junior is not slated to play at this weekend's event.

Isaiah Logue finished tied for 28th place with a 2-over par 212 (71-72-69), followed by Payton Taylor, who finished tied for 37th place with a 5-over par 215 (77-68-70). Hutson Chandler finished tied for 55th place with an 11-over par 221 (76-76-69) and Gabe Lench tied for 66th place with a 14-over par 224 (81-74-69).

Chandler, Lench, Logue and Taylor are slotted to tee it up again for the Flames at this weekend's event and will be joined by freshman Kieran Vincent.

Logue ranks second on Liberty's roster this year with a 71.05 season stroke average, followed by Lench (71.16), Vincent (72.32), Taylor (74.00) and Chandler (74.10).

The 15-team field will take to the Mark Bostick Golf Course at 8 a.m. on Saturday for 36 holes of continuous play. Liberty will be paired with golfers from Jacksonville and College of Charleston, with the teams starting on holes No. 8-10.
