Following a fourth-place finish at the Sea Best Invitational, Liberty's Gabe Lench has been named this week's Big South Men's Golfer of the Week.
The sophomore carded a 3-under par 207 (65-72-70) on Monday and Tuesday at the TPC Sawgrass – Dye's Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Lench's third sub-par tournament finish this season allowed him to secure fourth place in the 83-man field. He led the field in par-4 scoring, averaging 3.92 strokes per par-4 holes during the two-day event and tied for second with 12 birdies.
The native of Lake Mary, Fla., opened the tournament with a 5-under par 65, a mark that is tied for the fourth best 18-hole total in program history. Lench is the second Flame to card a 65 this season, as freshman Kieran Vincent closed out the fall with a 65 at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on Oct. 31.
Lench played two of his three rounds at the Sea Best Invitational at par or better, giving him 12-of-19 rounds at par or better during the 2016-17 season.
Lench's fourth-place finish helped the Flames secure a third-place team finish in a 15-team field that included 10 top 75 ranked programs. Following the event, Liberty maintained its national ranking at No. 32 in the first Golfstat rankings of the spring.
Lench and the Flames will return to the sophomore's home state on Feb. 18-19 when they participate in the SunTrust Gator Invitational. The 54-hole event will be played at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
