Tresor Mbuyu was named to the VaSID All-State first team.
A trio of Liberty Flames have been named to the 2016 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Men's Soccer All-State University Division team.
Forward Tresor Mbuyu was selected to the first team, while midfielder Kevin Mendoza and defender Kyle Carr garnered second team honors.
Mbuyu had quite a season in his first year as a Flame. The sophomore forward became the first Liberty player to be named the Big South Attacking Player of the Year and the second Flame in program history to be selected as a Big South Player of the Year. Current Liberty assistant coach Jose Gomez was named the Big South Player of the Year in 2000.
Mbuyu, who also earned all-conference first team honors, led the Big South with 29 points and tied for the conference lead with 10 goals. He finished the year second in the conference in assist with nine assists. The sophomore forward netted a point in 14 of Liberty's 18 games.
Mbuyu completed the year the nation's top 20 players in goals and assists. His season-ending point total was the most by a Flame since Darren Amoo had 33 points in 2009. In addition, the Charlotte, N.C., native's eight assists tie him with 10 other Liberty players for fourth on the program's single season list.
Mendoza received Big South All-Conference honors for the second consecutive year in 2016. After receiving honorable mention honors in 2015, the sophomore midfielder was selected to the all-conference first team, this year. Mendoza finished the year second on the Flames with six goals and four assists for 16 points. He finished the year among top 10 in the Big South Conference in goals (tied-8th) and assists (tied-7th). Mendoza scored a goal in three consecutive matches from Oct. 8 through Oct. 21, including Big South victories over Campbell and Gardner-Webb. In addition, the Mexico City, Mexico, native scored a career-high five points, two goals and an assist, in a 4-3 conference win at Winthrop on Sept. 24. In his final season at Liberty, Carr was named to the Big South All-Conference first team in 2016. The defender started 15 matches and played in 16 for the Flames. One of two Liberty team captains, Carr has provided steady play for a defense which has recorded four shutouts in 2016. The Indialantic, Fla., native had one assist on the season. He assisted on a goal in the Flames' 4-3 win at Winthrop on Sept. 24.
