Liberty Softball Announces Challenging 2017 Schedule

2017 Liberty Softball Schedule

Liberty's 2017 softball schedule, released today by fourth-year Head Coach Dot Richardson and her staff, features three games against 2016 Women's College World Series participants.

Liberty will face Women's College World Series competitors UCLA and national runner-up Auburn. The Lady Flames will also take on NCAA Super Regional participants Florida and Oregon and Regional finalists Longwood and Tennessee.

In total, the Lady Flames are scheduled to meet seven teams who qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. 2017 opponents Auburn (No. 2/2), No. 8/8 Florida, UCLA (No. 9/9) Oregon (No. 10/11) and No. 17/18 Tennessee all appeared in the final 2016 national rankings.

Liberty will play 20 home games at the 1,000-seat Liberty Softball Stadium. In addition to the third annual Liberty Softball Classic, the Lady Flames will host non-conference opponents Virginia, Virginia Tech, Hampton and North Carolina A&T. Liberty also has home conference series with Radford, Presbyterian and Longwood.

The Lady Flames will open the season at the Dot Richardson Invitational in Clermont, Fla., for the second year in a row, Feb. 10-12.

The following weekend, Liberty will compete in the prestigious Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. It will be the Lady Flames' first trip to California since 2009. While in California, Liberty will face 2016 WCWS team UCLA and Super Regional participant Oregon, among others.

Liberty travels back to Florida Feb. 24-26 to play in the Citrus Classic, with their top opponent there being 2016 Super Regional competitor Florida.

A trip to Auburn, Ala., opens March for the Lady Flames, as they will face last year's national runner-up Auburn twice during the Wilson/DeMarini Classic.

Liberty opens its home schedule by hosting the 2017 Liberty Softball Classic, March 10-12. The classic features opponents North Carolina Central, Rhode Island and Saint Francis (Pa.).

On March 28, Liberty heads to Knoxville, Tenn., to take on Tennessee for the first time since meeting in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The following day, Liberty will play at N.C. State.

The Lady Flames' conference schedule begins on March 17 at Charleston Southern, and ends with a three-game set, April 25-26 against two-time defending Big South champion Longwood at Liberty Softball Stadium.

The month of April sees visits from non-conference foes Hampton (April 4), Virginia (April 11) and Virginia Tech (April 18), while Liberty will play at Virginia on April 12.

The top six teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season will compete in the 2017 Big South Softball Championship, hosted by Longwood, from May 10-13. The Big South champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division I Softball Championship, which will begin the weekend of May 19.
