Following the conclusion of the 2016 football season, LFSN reporter Alan York had a chance to talk with Flames Head Coach Turner Gill to recap this year's gridiron action.
The 2016 season was the fifth for the Flames under Gill, resulting in Liberty's fourth title in the last five seasons and eighth in program history. The Flames finished the season with a 4-1 Big South mark, sharing the conference title with Charleston Southern.
Overall, Liberty posted a 6-5 record, giving the Flames a winning season for the 11th year in a row. Liberty entered the 2016 season as one of five FCS programs in the country to have posted a winning record in 10 or more consecutive seasons (Harvard 15; Jacksonville State 13; New Hampshire 12; McNeese State 11).
Gill saw 13 of his players earn All-Big South honors in 2016, tying Charleston Southern for the most all-conference honorees this season. The Buccaneers led all schools in the Big South with eight first-team honorees, while the Flames had the largest grouping of second-team selections.
Liberty's All-Big South first-team selections include: Dante' Shells (Sr., WR), Juwan Wells (So., DL), Nick Newman (Sr., LB), Alex Probert (Fr., K), Trey Turner (Jr., P) and Hunter Winstead (Jr., LS).
The Flames All-Big South second-team honorees include: Kendall Couamin (Sr., TE), Lucas Holder (Jr., OL), Dontae Duff (R-Fr., OL), Dexter Robbins (Sr., LB), Chris Turner (So., DB), Alpha Jalloh (Sr., DB) and Frankie Hickson (R-Fr., KS).
