Six players were recently added to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List, honoring the nation's top freshman FCS player, including Liberty's Alex Probert.
Probert was one of a half dozen players added to the award's annual watch list, giving Liberty two of the 23 names on the listing. Quarterback Stephen Calvert was part of the original list of 17 players named to the watch list when it was announced on Oct. 25.
When announced on Oct. 25, Calvert was named to the STATS FCS Freshman of the Year Award Watch List. Last week, STATS announced it has obtained the naming rights to the Jerry Rice Award from the Sports Network, allowing the list to be renamed.
Probert currently ranks No. 33 in the country in scoring per game and No. 2 among freshman kickers, averaging 7.7 points per game. He also ranks No. 5 in the country in field goals per game (1.44) and No. 27 in field goal percentage (76.5 percent/13-of-17).
The rookie has 69 points on the season, leaving him one point shy of tying the program record for most points scored by a freshman (K Phillip Harrelson with 70 points in 1995).
Probert has twice been honored this season by the Big South. He was named Big South Freshman of the Week after hitting a game-winning field goal in overtime against Gardner-Webb. He was selected Big South Special Teams Player of the Week following Liberty's Big South opening win at Kennesaw State.
Probert and Calvert are the first two Flames to appear on the national freshman of the year award watch list since quarterback Josh Woodrum in 2012. Woodrum finished in 13th place in the final voting for the Jerry Rice Award.
