Liberty outside hitter Leah Clayton has been named the Big South Freshman of the Week for the second week in a row, as announced Monday.
This is Clayton's third Big South Freshman of the Week award of the season, and fourth total honor, as she was named Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 3. Hannah Weidner was the last Lady Flame to be named Freshman of the Week three times in the same season, in 2014.
Liberty's Anna Gragg has received two Freshman of the Week honors, while Casey Goodwin was voted Freshman of the Week on Sept. 12.
Hailing from Danville, Va., Clayton led the way for Liberty during a 1-1 week. She averaged 4.86 kills per set, 4.0 digs per set and 5.28 points per set.
Clayton recorded her fourth 20-kill match in a row on Tuesday against Radford, scoring a career-high 25 kills while adding 18 digs. Her 25 kills versus Radford tied Lillie Happel (2011) for the most by a Lady Flame in a four-set match under the current 25-point rally-scoring system. She then registered nine kills and 10 digs in a three-set sweep of UNC Asheville on Saturday.
She is now tied for the team lead with nine double-doubles on the season. Additionally, she is ranked second in the Big South in kills per set (4.23) and points per set (4.69) in conference matches.
The Lady Flames (14-10, 9-3 Big South), ranked second in the conference, head to Buies Creek, N.C., to face fourth-place Campbell (12-14, 7-5), tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Gore Arena. Tomorrow's match will be Liberty's final regular-season away contest of the season.
