Liberty Hosts BIG EAST Opponent Georgetown on Saturday

Fresh off a win at No. 20 American on Thursday, the Liberty field hockey team returns to its home turf on Saturday for a match against BIG EAST opponent Georgetown.

The contest is set for a noon start at the Liberty Field Hockey Field and will be the fourth-ever meeting between the Lady Flames and the Hoyas. Liberty holds a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series, with the most recent victory a 7-0 triumph over Georgetown on Oct. 28, 2014, in Lynchburg.  

Liberty enters with a 4-6 overall record and 2-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Lady Flames defeated No. 20 American, 2-1, in overtime on Thursday. The Hoyas come in with a 4-8 record and 0-3 mark in BIG EAST play, but they won their most recent match, 4-2, over Longwood this past Sunday.

In its first year as an affiliate member of the BIG EAST, the Lady Flames are 2-1 in conference play. They earned 5-1 and 6-1 victories over Villanova and Quinnipiac on Sept. 16 and Sept. 23, respectively. Liberty's lone conference loss came last Friday, a 2-1 overtime defeat at then-No. 14 Old Dominion.

Liberty players have also made regular appearances in the BIG EAST Field Hockey Weekly Honors. Goalkeeper Allison Schaefer has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on a separate occasion.

Both Bethany and Serena Barr garnered recognition the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 19, while junior Summer Parker most recently made the weekly honor roll on Sept. 26.

Lady Flames News and Notes

  • Kendra Jones' game-winning goal at American was the first game-winner of her career and fourth goal of the season for the freshman.
  • Liberty's overtime win at American was its first OT victory of the year. The last overtime win for the Lady Flames came on Oct. 25, 2015, a 4-3 win at Providence.
  • Four different Lady Flames have game-winning goals this season: Kendra Jones, Bethany Barr, Summer Parker and Agueda Moroni.
  • Alynn Richardson tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the first half at American. She now has 13 career goals.
  • Junior defender Rachel Suter recorded her second defensive save of the year on Thursday at American.
  • Serena Barr leads the team in points with 15. The senior has four goals and seven assists.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Allison Schaefer ranks third in program history in career saves with 63.
  • Head coach Jodi Murphy is one win shy of 70 career victories at Liberty. She has a 69-42 record in her sixth season in charge of the program.
  • The Lady Flames hold a 69-43 advantage over their opponents in penalty corners drawn on the season.
  • Liberty has outscored its opponents, 25-23, this season.

Scouting Georgetown
On the offensive end, the Hoyas are led by sophomore Helena Masiello, who has four goals and an assist this season. Freshman Lindsay Getz also has four goals in 2016, while Michaela Bruno and Sam Hickey have three goals apiece. Nine different Georgetown players have scored at least one goal.  

Senior Rachel Skonecki (4-8-0, 3.30 GAA) will likely be in goal for the visitors.

The Hoyas are coached by Shannon Soares, who is in her third year as head coach. In her first two seasons, she led the program to 14 wins, the most in a two-year period since 2002-03.

A Look Ahead
The Lady Flames will travel to Storrs, Conn., on Saturday, Oct. 15 for a match at No. 1 UConn. The Huskies (11-0, 3-0 BIG EAST) are the only remaining unbeaten team in the nation and host Villanova and Dartmouth this weekend.
