2016-17 Liberty MBB Schedule
The 2016-17 Liberty men's basketball schedule is now official with the announcement of the Big South Conference slate. Liberty's first of 18 conference games will take place on Dec. 29, when the Flames travel to Presbyterian. Head coach Ritchie McKay's squad concludes the regular season on the road versus defending Big South champion UNC Asheville (Feb. 25).
The Flames will play an 18-game double-round robin schedule this season for the first time since 2010-11. Following a pair of away meetings to start the conference docket, Liberty's first home game in league play takes place on Jan. 3 against Asheville. Prior to concluding the 2016-17 regular season inside Kimmel Arena, Liberty will play its 17th and final home contest of the season against Longwood (Feb. 23). Liberty will have four opportunities to be selected for an ESPNU Wildcard game during the conference season - Jan. 19, Jan. 26, Feb. 9 and Feb. 23. If selected, fans will have the opportunity to see the Flames square off with either Gardner-Webb or Longwood in a nationally televised contest.
The 2017 Big South Men's Basketball Championship returns to a home-site/earned seed format last used in 2012. The four lowest seeds will compete in the first round on Feb. 28, which will be hosted by the No. 7 and No. 8 seeds. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played at the No. 1 seed on March 2-3 on ESPN3, while the highest remaining seed will host the championship game on March 5 at 1 p.m. on ESPN -- the first Big South title game appearance on ESPN since 2007.
Non-Conference Notes Game times have been set for all three of Liberty's non-conference men's and women's basketball doubleheaders at the Vines Center. The Flames will tip at 8:30 p.m. against Cairn (Nov. 11), 8 p.m. versus VCU (Nov. 15) and 2 p.m. against Princeton (Dec. 10).
During the week of Thanksgiving, Liberty will host three games, including one neutral site contest as part of the Indiana Classic. The Flames welcome UMass Lowell to the Vines Center on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. The following night, the River Hawks take on Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m. Liberty returns to the court on Nov. 23 to square off with the Delta Devils at 2 p.m. The Flames will wrap up play in the Indiana Classic when they host Central Penn on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
All other game times and TV listings will be announced at a later date.
