2016 Football Opponent Preview: Kennesaw State

In addition to its position previews and player features, will take a look at each of Liberty's 2016 Big South football opponents during the month of August.

During the opponent series, the website will bring you audio from the head coach of each football program. LFSN reporters Nick Pierce had a chance to talk with the head coaches during the Big South Football Media Day events in Charlotte in July.

Today, the series continues by taking a look at the Owls of Kennesaw State, who were predicted to finish in third place in the 2016 Big South Football Preseason Poll.

During today's audio session, Pierce and "Voice of the Flames" Alan York discuss Liberty's matchup with Kennesaw State on Oct. 15, plus get some insight from second-year head coach Brian Bohannon.

In the program's first season on the field, the Owls got off to a hot start, winning five of the team's first six games. The successful start to the season included a 12-7 victory over Gardner-Webb in Kennesaw State's first-ever Big South contest.

However, a 45-35 loss to Liberty on Oct. 24 started a string where Kennesaw State dropped four of its last five contests. The Owls finished their inaugural season on the field with a 6-5 overall record and a 2-4 mark in Big South play.

In its second year of competition, Kennesaw State returns 21 starters, including 10 offensive starters, nine defensive starters and two special teams starters.

Trey White returns as the starting quarterback after accounting for 42.8 percent of Kennesaw State's total offensive yards in 2015. He rushed for a team-high 964 yards and nine touchdowns, while throwing for 1,059 yards and eight touchdowns.

Defensive back Taylor Henkle became the program's first-ever All-Big South first team honoree after leading the Owls defensive efforts in 2015. He finished the season with 65 tackles, including 54 solo tackles.

Following the Flames' bye week (Oct. 8), Liberty will begin its quest for an eighth Big South title on Oct. 15 with a road contest at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga.
