Following Monday morning's practice, Liberty's 13th of August Training Camp, LFSN reporter Alan York had a chance to talk with Liberty freshman kicker Alex Probert.
Probert comes to Liberty from Andover High School in Andover, Minn., where he was a four-year letterwinner. The 5-9 kicker has had some length on his kicks for several years now, setting a school record with a 46-yard field goal as a sophomore.
Nearly 80 percent of his kickoffs as a junior and senior resulted in a touchback. Probert was named the NWSCS Special Teams Player of the Year as a junior and West Metro Special Teams Player of the Year as a senior.
Probert has big shoes to fill in 2016, as he looks to follow Liberty's four-year starting placekicker John Lunsford. He finished his career holding the NCAA record for most 50-plus yard field goals by a FCS kicker (12) and ranked second in school history in career scoring (294 points) and field goals (48).
On the practice field, the Flames will shift to evening workouts on Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday, Liberty Athletics will host its annual President's Kickoff Event where the athletics department will educate the incoming freshman students on Liberty's game day traditions.
Liberty will wrap up August Training Camp on Saturday night with the fifth annual Flames Fan Fest event. During the open practice, Liberty will hold its final scrimmage of training camp, followed by an autograph session with Liberty's players and coaching staff. Gates open at 6 p.m., with the scrimmage slated to start at 7 p.m. and the autograph session beginning at 8 p.m.
