As Liberty starts to wrap up its August Training Camp, LibertyFlames.com is winding down its preseason coverage by looking at the Flames' cornerback position today.
Liberty's cornerbacks will be a youthful group in 2016 with all but one of the eight available players being underclassmen. The lone upperclassman among the available players to Defensive Backs Coach Marshall Roberts is junior Tyrin Holloway.
The group does have one senior among its list of players, but he will be unavailable for play in 2016. Wesley Scott, who has been a staple at the NICKEL position the last three years, suffered a season-ending injury during spring workouts. Scott has played in 34 career games, posting 108 tackles (70 solo, 38 assisted), 10 pass breakups and two interceptions.
Scott will serve as a mentor to the younger group who will be led by sophomores Jeremy Peters and Chris Turner. Both players had breakout seasons in 2016, helping them solidify their roles for the upcoming season.
Turner earned All-Big South second team honors as a redshirt freshman, finishing the 2015 season with 24 tackles (20 solo, four assisted). He saw playing time in all 11 games, starting seven of the last eight contests of the year.
Turner made his mark in 2015 recording four interceptions, which individually ranked him No. 4 in the country. His interception total was the highest by a Liberty freshman since 1999 (Randall State also had four interceptions in 1999). His final interception of the season came during Liberty's upset win over No. 4 Coastal Carolina on a play that earned him the No. 1 play of the day on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 Plays listing.
Peters finished directly behind Turner in terms of tackles in 2015, recording 17 stops during his rookie season on the field (13 solo, four assisted). He also added two pass breakups and 1.5 tackles for a loss.
Holloway started nine of 11 games at cornerback in 2015 and entered August Training Camp behind Turner on the depth chart. Holloway has appeared in 25 games the last two years and comes into the season with 73 career stops (55 solo, 18 assisted).
Cam Jones will also provide depth at this position after appearing in nine games as a true freshman in 2015. He finished the season with five tackles (four solo, one assisted).
