2016-17 MBB Non-Conference Schedule

The Liberty men's basketball team embarks on one of its tougher non-conference schedules in recent years, with six of its opponents reaching postseason play in 2016.

Two NCAA Tournament teams highlight the Flames' non-conference slate, beginning with a matchup against VCU inside the Vines Center. Following the meeting with the Rams, Liberty will step inside Assembly Hall for the first time in program history to take on Indiana.

The Flames' four other 2016-17 non-conference opponents with postseason appearances include Furman (CIT), Houston (NIT), Princeton (NIT) and UNCG (CBI).

Liberty opens the season versus Cairn on Nov. 11 before hosting the Rams (Nov. 15) for the first time in over 20 years. The last time the Flames welcomed VCU into the Vines Center (Dec. 2, 1995), Liberty walked away with an 86-71 victory, marking the program's lone win in the all-time series against the Rams.

The Flames head to Bloomington, Ind., on Nov. 19, where they will square off with the Hoosiers. Liberty's first-ever meeting versus the Big Ten power kicks off the Flames' participation in the Indiana Classic.

Liberty returns home to continue the tournament, beginning with a meeting versus UMass Lowell on Nov. 21. The following day, the River Hawks play Mississippi Valley State in a neutral site contest inside the Vines Center. Liberty hosts the Delta Devils the next day. The Flames will briefly step away from tournament play on Nov. 26, traveling to William & Mary before wrapping up the Indiana Classic against Central Penn (Nov. 29).

Liberty begins the month of December with a road matchup versus UNCG on Dec. 3. McKay's squad steps back into the Vines Center for three straight home games against Furman (Dec. 6), Princeton (Dec. 10) and Clarks Summit (Dec. 16). Princeton will make its second trip to the Hill City after narrowly defeating the Flames, 80-74, in the inaugural meeting on Jan. 4, 2014.

The Flames conclude their non-conference slate with a road trip to the Lone Star State. Liberty takes on Lamar in a return meeting on Dec. 19, before facing Houston for the first time two days later.

The Big South portion of the Flames' schedule will be announced at a later date. Be sure to check back with for updates and the latest men's basketball news.
