2016 Liberty Volleyball Schedule Released

2016 Liberty Volleyball Schedule

Matchups against major-conference opponents Missouri and Pittsburgh highlight Liberty's 2016 volleyball schedule, released today by 13th-year Head Coach Shane Pinder.

The Lady Flames will open the season by playing in tournaments on the first four weekends, prior to the beginning of conference play. Liberty will appear in invitationals at Kennesaw State, Davidson and VCU, in addition to hosting the Liberty Invitational. Liberty will face a pair of teams (Missouri and Southern Conference champion Furman) that appeared in the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. Missouri and Furman are two out of four of Liberty's 2016 opponents (also Pittsburgh and High Point) to win 20 matches last season.

Liberty is scheduled to play 11 regular-season home matches. With defending conference champion Coastal Carolina leaving the Big South, Liberty will play twice against each league opponent this year, for a 16-match conference schedule.

The 2016 schedule begins with Liberty facing Pittsburgh at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 at the Kennesaw State Invitational in Kennesaw, Ga. While in Georgia, the Lady Flames will also meet the host Owls and Missouri. The Missouri Tigers went 27-6 last year, finishing the season ranked No. 25 in the AVCA national poll.

The Lady Flames open the month of September, hosting the Liberty Invitational, Sept. 2-3. Liberty will welcome USC Upstate, Hampton and ETSU to the Vines Center.

The following weekend, Sept. 9-10, the Lady Flames travel to North Carolina to play in the Davidson College Wildcat Classic. Liberty will meet 2015 SoCon champion Furman, who went 21-9 last season, along with USC Upstate and the host Davidson Wildcats.

Liberty wraps up its non-conference schedule at the VCU Invitational, Sept. 16-17. While in Richmond, the Lady Flames will compete against Morgan State, Middle Tennessee and VCU.

The Lady Flames open Big South play with three straight road matches, beginning on Sept. 23 at High Point. This is the first time since 2010 that Liberty will not start the conference schedule against Radford. Liberty wraps up September with matches at Radford (Sept. 27) and UNC Asheville (Sept. 30).

The month of October starts with three home contests in a row. The Lady Flames host Gardner-Webb and Winthrop, Oct. 7 and 8, respectively, before 2015 Big South Volleyball Championship runner-up Campbell visits the Vines Center, Oct. 11.

Four straight away matches ensue, including weekends at Presbyterian and Charleston Southern (Oct. 14-15) and at Winthrop and Gardner-Webb (Oct. 21-22).

Liberty will play five out of its last six Big South contests at home, starting with a four-match homestand. The Lady Flames host Radford on Oct. 25 before facing UNC Asheville on Oct. 29.

The Lady Flames play at Campbell on Nov. 1 before wrapping up the regular season with a three-match homestand.

The weekend of Nov. 4-5 sees visits from Presbyterian and High Point. The Lady Flames are then scheduled to host Charleston Southern, Nov. 12 in their regular-season finale.

The 2016 Big South Volleyball Championship dates and site will be announced at a later date. The winner of the conference tournament receives the Big South's automatic qualifying bid to the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.

The 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship is scheduled to begin on Dec. 2.
