The fifth-seeded Liberty Lady Flames (5-13, 4-4 Big South) lacrosse squad fell to No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina (11-6, 5-3 Big South) in the 2016 Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinals. The Chanticleers ousted the Lady Flames by the final score of 9-8 in double overtime.
For the second time this season, the Lady Flames took a halftime lead over the Chanticleers but fell in the overtime periods. Coastal Carolina defeated Liberty by the final of 11-10 in the first overtime period on April 2 in Conway, S.C.
Coastal's Sophie Crowther netted the first goal of the contest following a free-position attempt with 28:46 remaining in the first half.
The Lady Flames rebounded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 advantage. Liberty's first goal was netted by Katy Pridemore, her 10th of the season. Pridemore's goal was set up by Kallie Britton's 59th career assist, one shy of Morgan Becker's program record of 60.
Britton then contributed in a different way on the offensive end, netting back-to-back unassisted goals in the fourth and sixth minutes of competition to claim the 3-1 lead over the Chanticleers.
Coastal cut the deficit in half after Madeline Bromley notched her ninth goal of the season, assisted by Maggie Carr with 22:33 remaining in the first half.
Michaela Rich extended the Liberty lead back to two with 14:32 remaining, assisted by Britton's program-tying 60th career assist.
After the Chanticleers trimmed the Liberty lead back to one, the Lady Flames rebounded with three unanswered goals to take a game-high four-goal lead. Brianna McCaffrey began the three-goal run for the Lady Flames with her 13th goal of the season.
Britton then buried the free-position shot with 6:35 remaining in the first half to double Coastal Carolina's goal total of three, completing the first-half hat trick.
With 3:53 left to play in the opening stanza, redshirt senior Callie Francis netted her 26th goal of the season, set up by Big South Freshman of the Year Kayla Foster's 29th assist on the year.
The two squads traded the final two goals of the opening half to solidify the score at 8-4 in favor of the Lady Flames heading into the locker room. Katy Pridemore's goal with 2:02 remaining to place Liberty ahead 8-4 would be the final Lady Flames goal of the 2016 season.
Coastal Carolina netted four unanswered goals in the first nine minutes of the second half to even the contest at 8-8 with 21:19 remaining in the second half.
Neither team scored in the final 21 minutes, setting up for the second overtime meeting between the two squads this season.
Coastal outshot Liberty 2-1 in the first overtime period but could not find the back of the net due to Katherine Widrick standing tall in the frame.
However, Haley Alexander scored the golden goal in the third minute of the second overtime period to catapult the Chanticleers into the Big South semifinals, besting the Lady Flames 9-8.
Aubrie Tarris began the contest in goal for the Lady Flames, allowing five goals and recording four saves in 33 minutes of play. Widrick entered the game with an 8-5 lead and yielded four goals while notching nine saves. Widrick received the loss in the decision.
Coastal outshot the Lady Flames 29-24 and also won the draw control battle, 11-10. The ground ball battle was deadlocked at 21-21.
