Tori Zavodny went 2-for-3 with a double, homer, two stolen bases and three runs scored at Radford, Tuesday.
Liberty scored a pair of runs in the 10th inning, and held on for a 4-3 victory in game one of a doubleheader, Tuesday at Radford.
With the win, the Lady Flames (27-24, 13-6) Big South are now 7-0 in Big South series openers this year. They also won at Radford for the first time since May 9, 2009. Liberty also tied a program record with its 13 conference wins, as the 2010 Lady Flames went 13-5. Radford's (29-19, 10-6) winless streak extends to four games.
Julia DiMartino improves to 15-10 on the season, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits, while striking out 10 and walking five in 10 innings of work. She has tied Ali Thompson's (2001) program freshman record with 155 strikeouts this season.
Abby Morrow (17-14) drew the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, with six strikeouts and three walks in 9 2/3 innings pitched.
Tori Zavodny batted 2-for-3 with a double, home run, one RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Deidra See went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Madi Clarke and Jaclyn Amader added one hit apiece.
For Radford, Hannah Medlam went 2-for-4 with one run scored, while Kayla Bishton batted 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Summer Robinson and Marissa Yow hit one double each.
Robinson led off the bottom of the second with a double down the left-field line. A one-out sacrifice bunt sent Robinson to third. Yow grounded out to short, keeping the game scoreless.
Zavodny hit a leadoff double off the wall in right-center during the top of the fourth. She stole third, before See plated her with a squeeze bunt for a 1-0 Liberty lead. Rylee Reynolds then hit into a 1-6-3 double play.
Radford responded in the home half of the fourth. Robinson reached on an error, before Bishton hit a two-run, opposite-field home run off the foul pole in left. DiMartino set down the next two batters, ending the frame.
Zavodny lined a game-tying homer to left-center with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Sarah Robertson reached on an error, before a single by See put runners on the corners. After See stole second, Morrow fanned Reynolds. Kassidy McCoy bounced out to the pitcher for the third out, and the game remained tied, 2-2.
Clarke singled through the right side to start the seventh. Morrow got three ground ball outs, sending the game to the bottom of the seventh inning.
Yow doubled off the wall in right-center, leading off the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch runner Haley Hutchins swiped third. With two outs and runners on second and third, Nia Chiles lined out to Reynolds, who made a game-saving catch at second.
McIntyre entered the circle in relief of Morrow to begin extra innings. She got Zavodny to fly out, before Morrow came right back in. Robertson singled to center with one out. She went to second on a passed ball. Reynolds popped out to first base for the third out.
DiMartino worked around a two-out walk in the eighth, striking out Davis for the third out.
With the International tie-breaker in effect to start the 10th, Liberty pushed home the go-ahead run. Cassie Gingerich sent Blair Lawrence to third with a sacrifice bunt, before a sacrifice fly by Taylor gave Liberty a 3-2 lead. Morrow walked back-to-back batters. See made it 4-2 with an RBI single to center.
Radford narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the 10th, when Mantel reached on an error and Medlam scored. After a hit batter and a walk, DiMartino fanned Davis with the bases loaded, sealing the 4-3 win.
Game two between the Lady Flames and Highlanders is currently under way.
