Liberty Lady Flames' standout freshman Anna Dollar has been named this week's Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, for matches played during Feb. 15-21. Dollar receives this award for the second time this season, the other being on Jan. 20.
Dollar captured the Big South Freshman of the Week award after turning in a perfect 4-0 record this past weekend, notching two wins in singles and two in doubles during Friday and Sunday's matches.
The Pennsylvania native began competition on Friday, picking up a key doubles victory for Liberty against VCU. With the Lady Flames having already won one doubles match and dropping the other, Dollar and teammate Maria Khval pulled away from VCU's Anna Rasmussen and Janina Braun by a score of 6-4 to give Liberty the early 1-0 advantage. Later in the match, Dollar defeated Darya Berezhnaya in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 to give the Lady Flames a 3-1 advantage. Liberty could not hold on to win the match despite the efforts from Dollar.
The freshman then posted two more wins on the weekend, both against No. 73 North Texas on Sunday in a 4-2 loss. Similar to Friday, Dollar and Khval earned a key doubles win, when it seemed to be slipping away from Liberty. The Lady Flames were ahead 1-0 for the doubles advantage but were down 5-4 on court one. Dollar and Khval buckled down and claimed the No. 2 doubles match, defeating North Texas' Nastya Shestakova and Agustina Valenzuela by a score of 6-4 to capture the doubles point. Dollar went on to notch the only singles victory for Liberty, defeating Shestakova in three sets from the No. 3 singles slot. Dollar dropped the first set 6-2, but rebounded in a strong way to claim sets two and three by scores of 6-2, 6-2.
Dollar and the Lady Flames will return to action on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Liberty will take on No. 42 William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
