The Liberty Lady Flames fell to No. 73 North Texas on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Racket by a score of 4-2.
With the loss, Liberty falls to 3-5 on the season with North Texas improving to 5-4 on the campaign.
Liberty snatched the doubles point away from North Texas, winning in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko began by defeating Liang Minying and Laura Arciniegas by a score of 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles slot.
Liberty clinched the doubles point when Anna Dollar and Maria Khval defeated Nastya Shestakova and Agustina Valenzuela in the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-4.
The Mean Green won back-to-back matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions to claim the 2-1 lead against Liberty. Maria Kononova defeated Khval in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 to put North Texas on the board. Shortly following, Tamuna Kutubidze bested Belen Rivera in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4 to take a 2-1 advantage over the Lady Flames.
The Mean Green received a 3-1 cushion when Kamilla Galieva defeated Emily Groeneveld in the No. 5 singles slot, 6-2, 6-0.
Dollar applied the pressure on North Texas, pulling Liberty to within one after her three-set victory over Shestakova. Dollar dropped the first set 6-2, but then bounced back to claim sets two and three by scores of 6-2, 6-2.
The Mean Green rebounded with a three-set victory provided by Valenzuela in the No. 6 singles position, claiming the 4-2 victory for North Texas. Valenzuela bested Thong, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the match.
Crist was in her second set, down 6-5, before the match was called following Mean Green claiming the victory over Liberty.
"North Texas is a very solid, well-coached team that pushed us to raise our level," commented head coach Jeff Maren. "In some instances we were able to do so, and in others we didn't. We will need to find a way to be more ‘gritty' on court so that we can take the next step in our progression as a team."
The Lady Flames return to action on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. when they travel to Williamsburg, Va., for an in-state battle with No. 39 William & Mary.
