Following a seventh-place finish at the 2016 Sea Best Invitational, Liberty's Gabe Lench has been named this week's Big South Men's Golf Freshman of the Week.
Lench carded a 1-over par 211 (68-72-71) on the TPC Sawgrass – Dye's Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., to share seventh place in the 84-man field.
The freshman's seventh-place showing led the Flames and allowed Liberty to secure a second-place overall finish, trailing only No. 19 Florida. The 15-team tournament field included 10 programs who finished the fall ranked inside the top 75 Golfstat team rankings.
The native of Lake Mary, Fla., opened the event with a 2-under par 68, tying his lowest 18-hole total of the season. The score also accounted for his third sub-70 round of the season.
The honor marks the second time Lench has been named the Big South's top weekly rookie this season. He also took home the same accolade after sharing first-place honors with teammate Isaiah Logue at the Rees Jones Invitational in September.
Lench currently ranks third on Liberty's roster with a 73.93 season stroke average and has posted a pair of top 10 finishes in five team events.
Lench and the Flames return to the "Sunshine State" later this month when they participate in the 2016 SunTrust Gator Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event, Feb. 20-21, is hosted by Florida at its own Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
