The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad fell for the second consecutive day in Cincinnati, Ohio, this time to host Cincinnati by a score of 5-2. The loss drops Liberty to 1-2 on the season while the Bearcats improve to 1-0 with the win in their season-opener.
Cincinnati claimed the doubles point after notching two of three doubles victories. The Lady Flames received a doubles win from the No. 2 position with Anna Dollar and Maria Khval besting Antonella Bramato and Katya Bure, 7-6 (7-4).
With Liberty trailing, 3-0, freshman Aleksandra Panchenko notched her first collegiate victory from the No. 5 singles position, downing Bure in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Evangeline Crist cut the deficit to one, besting Bramato in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, from the No. 3 singles slot.
The Bearcats clinched the match with Ali Miller defeating Khval in three hard-fought sets. Khval claimed the first set 7-5, before falling 6-1 in the second set. Miller rode her momentum into the third set, downing Khval 6-3 to give Cincinnati a 4-2 lead, sealing the contest. Lauren Bellinger defeated Belen Rivera to in three sets from the No. 1 singles slot in the 5-2 victory for Cincinnati.
"We played better than yesterday, but still have some work to do," commented head coach Jeff Maren. "Cincinnati did a great job today and so I'm sure that this will help us to improve."
Liberty will return to action on Jan. 30 when the Lady Flames travel to Syracuse, N.Y., to take on the Syracuse Orange at 11 a.m.
