Liberty Lady Flames' standout sophomore Evangeline Crist and freshman Anna Dollar have been named this week's Big South Player and Freshman of the Week. The duo receive the awards for matches played from Jan. 11-17. Crist and Dollar aided Liberty in collecting its third consecutive season-opening victory on Saturday, besting Wofford 6-1 in Lynchburg, Va.
Crist garners the Big South Player of the Week honor for the first time in her career. The Georgia native was thrice named the Big South Freshman of the Week a season ago. Crist finished the week with a perfect 2-0 record, including one win in singles competition and one in doubles play. Crist partnered with Valerie Thong to down Wofford's Kalli Karas and Lauren Reid by a score of 6-4. The sophomore then bested Taylor Carlson in single's play, 6-1, 6-0 to give Liberty a 2-0 lead over the Terriers.
Dollar captured the Big South Freshman of the Week award after finishing the weekend with a 2-0 record in Saturday's victory. Dollar and Maria Khval put the Lady Flames on the board for the doubles point, defeating Cassidy Hicks and Mareli Sanchez, 6-1. It was the young freshman who clinched the match for the Lady Flames. With Liberty ahead, 3-0, the Pennsylvania native finished off Karas, 6-4, 6-3 to boost Liberty over Wofford.
The Lady Flames will return to action this weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio. Liberty will take on Xavier on Friday at 6 p.m. The following day, the Lady Flames have a 3 p.m. bout with host Cincinnati.
