Big South Freshman of the Year Ednah Kurgat
For the second time in three weeks, Liberty freshman Ednah Kurgat has been tabbed the ECAC Division I Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week.
Kurgat was named Big South Freshman of the Year after placing second of 86 women's runners at the 2015 Big South Cross Country Championships, Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C. Her 5K time of 17:12.97 was the fastest ever recorded by a Lady Flame at the Big South meet and the third fastest in course history at the Milliken Research Center. Additionally, Kurgat clocked the second-fastest 5K overall in program history, following her own school-record 17:11.1 effort at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 26.
Kurgat had previously been voted Freshman of the Year at both the 2015 Big South Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships. On Saturday, she became the first Lady Flame to be named Big South Freshman of the Year for cross country since Dacia Bushman in 2007.
Seven Liberty women's runners will compete in the Hokie Open, Friday at Virginia Tech's Buford Meredith Cross Country Course in Blacksburg, Va. The 4K race will go off at 5:10 p.m.
Meanwhile, Kurgat and the rest of the top seven Flames and Lady Flames will take this weekend off from competition in preparation for the 2015 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships. The meet will take place at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va., on Nov. 13, beginning at noon.
