The Liberty Flames seniors
The Liberty Flames scored a season-high five goals, rolling to a 5-1 victory over the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon at Osborne Stadium.
Seniors Tim Harbison, Sachem Wilson, Blessing Tahuona and Kurt Meyers each scored a goal in the contest. Brady Mazzei also netted a goal for the Flames.
For the third straight contest, Wilson scored a goal, upping his team-leading total to six goals on the year. The senior also added an assist.
Tahuona also collected an assist and scored his third goal on the year, while team captain Tim Harbison netted his third goal. Meyers and Mazzei each scored their first career goal in the contest. In addition, Mazzei had an assist.
Senior defenders Connor Fleming and Jamie Foxwell and midfielder Kyle Carr each drew assists in the match.
Prior to the contest, Liberty honored the 11 members of its roster, playing in their final regular season home game on Senior Day – Tyler Bullock, Will Coleman, Khalil Karl, Glodi Konga, Josiah Phillips, Fleming, Foxwell, Harbison, Meyers, Tahuona and Wilson.
Liberty moves to 2-5-1 in Big South Conference action and 6-9-1 overall. The Flames' five goals in the contest, eclipse their previous season-high of three in a 3-0 win over VMI on Sept. 11 and a 3-3, two overtime tie against Longwood, this past Tuesday. Presbyterian drops to 0-7-1 in conference play and 0-15-1 overall. Liberty has defeated Presbyterian in each of their eight meetings.
Controlling possession throughout the first half, the Flames struck for their first goal of the contest during the 13th minute. Finding open field ahead of him, Wilson moved the ball down the right side of the field, sending a pass to the near post for Tahuona. The forward sent a pass to the top of the 18-yard box for Harbison, who ripped a shot in stride into the upper part of the goal for a 1-0 edge.
Liberty extended its lead to 2-0 during the 23rd minute. Off a corner kick, Fleming received a return pass after kicking the corner on the right side of the field. The senior lifted a pass into the right side of the box, which Foxwell dropped to Wilson for a scoring shot and a two-goal lead at halftime.
Tahouna got the scoring started in the second half. Off a turnover in the midfield, Carr sent a long pass ahead of the Blue Hose defenders and into open space for the forward. Tahouna out raced the Presbyterian defense to the ball and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for a 3-0 advantage during the 59th minute
The Blue Hose got on the scoreboard during the 68th minute. Midfielder Steven Huppe jumped on a loose clearing attempt by Liberty and scored from 18 yards out. His first goal of the season, cut the Flames' advantage to 3-1.
Mazzei extended the Liberty lead during the 70th minute. The midfielder scored from 25 yards off on a free kick to the far post.
Meyers closed out the scoring. Mazzei sent a pass from the lower right corner of the field to the top of the left corner of the 18-yard box. There, Meyers netted the final goal of the afternoon for the final score of 5-1.
Liberty held a 25-9 advantage in shots and a 12-4 edge in corner kicks in the contest.
Goalkeeper Jeremy Lee mode three saves, while playing the entire 90 minutes between the posts for Liberty. Johnny Archer recorded nine saves for Presbyterian.
Liberty closes out its 2015 regular season schedule on Wednesday. The Flames will travel to Buies Creek, N.C. for a match against the Campbell Camels. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
