Jason Burgess notched Liberty's lone singles win at the USTA Futures tournament.
The Liberty men's tennis squad concluded play at the USTA Futures tournament, this weekend. The tournament was held in Costa Mesa, Calif., and four Flames represented Liberty in the weekend tournament. For this particular event, there was no consolation bracket to be played.
Ryker Heller, Eddie Gutierrez, Max Borcuti and Jason Burgess represented Liberty in this tournament. Burgess notched the Flames' lone win of the tournament in the first round, ousting Kamil Sikorski, a United States native. Burgess breezed through Sikorski, 6-1, 6-0 to cruise into the second round. However, Burgess then suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback of his own, falling to Cristobal Rivera of the United States.
Borcuti was the first Flame to play in Costa Mesa, squaring off against Alexey Nesterov of Russia. Borcuti claimed the first set, 7-5, before falling in the final two sets, 7-5, 6-3. Heller squared off against Austin Rapp of the United States, falling in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Gutierrez yielded a similar result, falling to Vitali Vasileuski of Belarus, 6-1, 6-2.
Liberty returns to action on Thursday when the Flames will compete in their second consecutive USTA Futures tournament, this time in Laguna Niguel, Calif.
