The Liberty men's tennis squad will compete in its second fall tournament this weekend as the Flames travel to Costa Mesa, Calif., taking part in the USTA Futures tournament.
The Flames are coming off of a strong showing at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship in Athens, Ga. Overall, Liberty finished with a 12-12 singles mark and a 1-4 doubles record during the event. Diego Castano and Sam Matheson highlighted the competition for the red and blue as Castano advanced to the semifinals while Matheson knocked off UGA's blue chip athlete, Emil Reinberg, in the first round.
Head coach Chris Johnson has taken four of the student-athletes to represent Liberty in the tournament. Ryker Heller, Max Borcuti, Eddie Gutierrez and Jason Burgess will compete in the USTA Futures this weekend. Gutierrez and Borcuti enter the weekend having had a successful tournament. The freshmen pair combined to finish 4-2 in their first collegiate tournament.
The USTA Futures tournament will begin tomorrow and conclude on Sunday. For this particular tournament, there is no consolation bracket to be played.
Following this weekend's tournament, Liberty will return to action on Sept. 24 in Laguna Niguel, Calif., competing in another USTA Futures tournament.
