The Liberty Lady Flames women's tennis squad capped off the 2015 Elon Invitational by capturing five finals titles on Sunday. Liberty won all three of the singles finals that it appeared in alongside two of the three doubles draws.
In the Acorn Singles flight, Lauren Mabe and Evangeline Crist both advanced to the finals and were each awarded a share of the win by virtue of head coach Jeff Maren's decision to not have them play each other.
Belen Rivera and Mariely Hassey advanced to the final and received the same result in the Gold Singles flight.
Valerie Thong notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Elon's Maria Paraja to win the Powell Singles outright. The victory was Thong's first singles flight triumph in two attempts at the Elon Invitational.
Maria Khval and Anna Dollar notched Liberty's first doubles victory of the afternoon. The duo upended a pair of Winthrop opponents, 8-5, to claim the Maroon Doubles finals draw.
Thong and Crist notched their second straight doubles final victory in as many years at the Elon Invitational. Liberty's doubles tandem bested Wake Forest's Courtney Meredith and Xue Zhang, 8-3, claiming the Phoenix Doubles flight.
The Lady Flames' lone finals loss in the event came in the Gold Doubles flight as Rivera and Hassey dropped a tough 8-5 decision to UNCG's Jamie Grinberg and Masey DeMoss.
Overall, Liberty finished the tournament with a 24-7 singles record and an 8-6 doubles mark.
"This weekend was a great start to our fall season," commented Maren. "The girls played many competitive matches and competed hard each day. I believe that we now have a better understanding of our strengths and weaknesses, and will carry added confidence into our next tournament."
Liberty will next compete in the ITA All-American tournament in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 2-4.
