The Liberty Lady Flames women's tennis team has been ranked among the top teams in the Atlantic Region, as the final ITA rankings were released yesterday.
The Lady Flames were ranked ninth in the final Atlantic Region poll for the 2014-15 season. It is the second consecutive season that Liberty has appeared in the final year-end regional rankings. Last year, the Lady Flames achieved their highest regional ranking in program history, finishing the year at No. 7 in the Atlantic Region.
Liberty has been ranked regionally three times. Besides the past two years, the Lady Flames concluded the 2011 season with a No. 10 ranking.
"Finishing inside the top 10 in our region is a testament to the girls' consistent play throughout the season," stated Liberty Women's Tennis Head Coach Jeff Maren. "We had very few bad days and a lot of good ones. This achievement is one that we can be proud of, but it also provides us with an incentive to climb higher and accomplish more."
The Lady Flames set a program record for wins in 2015, posting a 19-5 mark. In Big South Conference play, Liberty recorded a 7-2 mark, tying the school record for conference victories for the second consecutive year. In addition, Maren's squad recorded the program's first ever victory over a ranked opponent when they defeated No. 71 Pacific on March 10.
The doubles tandem of sophomore Maria Khval and senior Brittany Yang was selected to the 2015 Big South All-Conference team. Khval also garnered all-conference honors in singles. Meanwhile, Yang was named Co-Big South Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned all-academic team honors for the third time in her career.
