Eagles Outlast Lady Flames, 11-7

Winthrop earned a doubleheader sweep over Liberty Friday, as a seven-run fourth inning sparked the Eagles to an 11-7 victory during game two at Terry Field.

The Eagles (24-23, 13-9) extended their winning streak to five games after 6-3 and 11-7 wins over the Lady Flames today. Liberty's record stands at 27-27, 12-11 in conference play following the team's third setback in a row.

The Lady Flames and Eagles conclude their series with a single game tomorrow at Terry Field. Tomorrow's game, originally scheduled for a noon start, has been rescheduled, now set to begin at 6 p.m., tomorrow.

Shayna Covington went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Leah Young and Kelsey Ritter both had two hits. Jamie Roth hit a three-run home run, while Maddie Antone went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Liberty's Kelby Allen batted 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. With 27 career home runs, Allen is now in sole possession of fifth place all-time at Liberty. Madi Clarke, Madison Kotchey and Kassiday McCoy added two hits apiece. Allen, McCoy and Alexia Taylor scored two runs each. Tori Zavodny went 1-for-3 and stole her team-leading 24th base.

Sutton Watson (8-6) earned her second win of the day, allowing three unearned runs on six hits in 4 2/13 innings pitched. Starter Dallas King gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out two in 2 1/3 innings.

Chandler Ball (19-10) drew the loss after giving up five unearned runs on four hits with one walk in 1/3 of an inning of relief. Abby Tincher yielded four runs (none earned) on three hits, while walking two and fanning one in 3 1/3 frames. Kenzie Friesen tossed 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout.   

Liberty wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, as Zavodny singled and stole second to start the game. Megan Robinson then sent an RBI single to center. After a Taylor popout, Winthrop got out of the jam when Allen lined into a double play.

The Lady Flames tacked on a run during the second frame. Kotchey hit a leadoff single up the middle. A Katie Han groundout sent her to second. Kotchey reached third via error, with McCoy making it to second on the play. Lawrence plated Kotchey with a grounder on the infield for a 2-0 lead. King struck out Zavodny for the third out.

Winthrop loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the second. Loken fouled out, and Zavodny erased Ritter with a perfect throw home. Covington tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run double before being thrown out at third on the play.

Taylor lined a one-out double to left in the third stanza. An Allen single sent Taylor to third. Watson then entered the game in relief of King. After a stolen base by Allen, Kotchey reached on an error, with two runs scoring. An RBI single by McCoy made it 5-2.    

Zavodny drew a leadoff walk during the top of the fourth. Robinson moved her to second with a sacrifice. With two outs, Allen scorched a liner into the glove of Ritter at third.

Winthrop stormed ahead in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs on six hits during the frame. The Eagles got a pinch-hit, three-run homer from Roth and RBI base hits from Antone, Ritter and Paige Haley.

The Lady Flames threatened to score during the fifth, as Kotchey hit a leadoff single. Clarke singled with two outs, before Blair Lawrence popped out, ending the threat.

Liberty capitalized on a two-out error by the Eagles in the top of the sixth, as Allen drew the Lady Flames to within two, 9-7, with a two-run homer to right. Covington made a fine catch in left for the third out.

The hosts loaded the bases with nobody out during their sixth at bat. A pair of bases-loaded walks boosted Winthrop's lead to 11-7 before Friesen struck out Zharne Glover.

A one-out single by McCoy gave Liberty life in the seventh. Clarke then doubled to left field, but left fielder Covington threw out pinch runner Cassie Gingerich at third. Watson got Lawrence to ground out, clinching the win for the Eagles.
