The Liberty men's tennis squad notched its sixth conference victory of the season on Sunday, defeating Radford 4-3. Liberty's sixth victory set the most conference wins in a single season in program history. With the victory, the Flames improved to 13-9 overall, including a 6-2 mark in Big South action. The Highlanders fall to 8-10, 3-4 in Big South play following the loss.
The Flames managed to claim the doubles point after defeating Radford in two of the three doubles sets. Egon Samaai and Sam Matheson defeated Patrick O'Keefe and Jose Moreno Manzano, 8-5 to give the red and blue an early 1-0 advantage for the doubles point. After Radford claimed the doubles set from the No. 3 slot, Jorge Azuero and David Bush notched the doubles point after besting Janken Thoen and Samuel Taylor, 8-6 from the No. 2 doubles position.
Samaai delivered Liberty's second point of the contest after taking down Nikhil Mannepalli in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 to give the Flames a 2-0 advantage.
Moreno Manzano put the Highlanders on the board from the No. 4 singles position after downing Jason Burgess, 6-1, 6-2.
However, Azuero extended the lead back to two after claiming a crucial straight set victory from the No. 2 single spot. The Colombia native defeated Michiel Meekers in the first set, 7-6 (5) and followed up the close set with a 6-2 victory in set two.
Freshman standout Diego Castano clinched the match for the red and blue in straight sets from the No. 5 singles slot. The North Carolina native cruised past Thoen in the first set, 6-2 before taking Thoen to the wire in the second set. With the second set tied, 6-6, Castano edged past Thoen in the final set by a score of 7-1 to claim the 7-6 second set victory to clinch the match at 4-1.
With the match already in hand, Radford picked up two victories in the remaining singles matches to cut the three point deficit down to one.
Liberty returns to action at the Big South Championship in Asheville, N.C., which will begin on April 18.
