The Liberty Flames tennis squad dropped its second consecutive Big South contest of the season on Saturday in Boiling Springs, N.C., falling to Gardner-Webb by a score of 5-2.
With the loss, Liberty falls to 10-8 including a 3-2 Big South mark while the Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 8-9 and 2-3 in conference play.
Gardner-Webb claimed the doubles point after taking a 2-1 advantage in doubles play over the Flames. The Runnin' Bulldogs captured wins from the No. 1 and 3 doubles slots respectively.
Liberty collected its lone doubles victory when Egon Samaai and co-captain Dillon Segur bested Brendan Dempsey and Korhan Ates, 8-7.
Sam Matheson evened the match at one apiece after downing Benjamin Kaszas from the No. 1 singles slot, 6-3, 6-4.
Segur put the Flames on top from the No. 2 singles position after besting Nikita Zverkov in three hard fought sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
Gardner-Webb regained composure to win four straight singles matches to claim the 5-2 victory over Liberty. Two of the four matches went down to the wire as Ernest Alberch defeated Jorge Azuero in three sets while Dempsey defeated Diego Castano in three hard fought sets.
Liberty returns to action Tuesday when the Flames conclude their home schedule against the Campbell Camels at 2 p.m. at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts.
