Egon Samaai has been named the Corvias ECAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played from March 16-22.
The 6-6 South African junior finished the week with a 4-2 overall record over a span of three matches.
Samaai provided Liberty with two crucial victories this past weekend against Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian. Samaai clinched the match for the Flames in both contests, pulling off strong upsets against the Top 2 Preseason Big South squads. In the first match against Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Samaai handled Pedro Leme in the first set, 7-6, before falling in the second set by a score of 6-4. The South African native rebounded from the tough second set to cruise past Leme in the third set, 6-2, clinching the 4-3 come-from-behind victory for the red and blue.
In Sunday's 4-3 victory against the Blue Hose, Samaai delivered yet another strong performance. After dropping the first set, 6-4, the South African native cruised to a 6-2 victory in the second set, adding to a dramatic finish. Samaai fell behind 5-3 in the tiebreaker, but remained poised throughout the set. The junior battled back against Brandon Mills, winning four straight games to clinch the match with his 7-5 third set victory.
The Flames return to action tomorrow when Liberty travels to Asheville, N.C. to take on the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a conference bout.
