The Liberty Flames men's tennis squad fell to Richmond by a score of 4-3 Wednesday evening in Richmond, Va. The Flames fall to 8-6 on the year while the Spiders improve to 8-6.
Liberty jumped out ahead in the beginning of the match after defeating Richmond in two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Jorge Azuero and Sam Matheson downed Canyon Teague and James Aronson, 8-2, to begin doubles play on the right note for the Flames.
Dillon Segur and Diego Castano then bested brothers Ethan Dunbar and Jacob Dunbar by a score of 8-6 to clinch the doubles point for the red and blue.
After surrendering the doubles point, Ethan Dunbar turned around to drop Segur from the No. 1 singles slot, 6-0, 6-3 to even the match at one apiece.
Azuero lifted Liberty back on top of Richmond after he defeated Caleb Troy, 6-2, 6-3 to regain the lead at 2-1.
The Spiders would not go away when Aronson picked up a victory from the No. 6 singles slot, surpassing Burgess in straight sets by scores of 6-4, 6-1 to even the match back at 2-2.
Egon Samaai succeeded in putting the Flames ahead of the Spiders once more when he secured a straight-set victory from the No. 3 singles slot, 6-2, 6-4.
However, Richmond collected the final two singles wins to drop Liberty by a score of 4-3. The Spiders had to take the Flames to three sets in each of the final two draws in order to notch the victory against Liberty. Jonathan Quenard bested Castano, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to even the match at 3-3 with one singles draw left.
In the final singles position, Jacob Dunbar bested Matheson despite dropping the first set, 6-4. Dunbar secured the match for the Spiders after winning the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Liberty returns to action on Saturday, when the Flames play host to Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m. The contest is slated to be played at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts.
