Liberty men's tennis sophomore Sam Matheson has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the Big South Conference, for matches played from March 9-15.
Matheson aided the Flames in posting a 2-1 record this past week while in Texas as the transfer sophomore finished the week with a perfect 6-0 mark. He began the week with a doubles victory alongside Jorge Azuero as the duo bested Incarnate Word's Leonard Ivic and Brody Rodriguez by a score of 6-4. Matheson carried his momentum into singles play where he downed Joey Vatanadilok in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
The New Zealand native paired with Azuero in the second game of the week as the dynamic duo defeated St. Mary's Adam Dockery and Aldo Maldonado by a score of 8-3 from the No. 2 doubles slot. Matheson then competed from the No. 2 singles slot for the second straight match as he dropped St. Mary's Aldo Maldonado in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Matheson and the Flames return to action tomorrow when they take on Richmond at 2:30 p.m. The contest will be played in Richmond, Va., at the Tennis Complex.
