Before the Liberty Flames return to the golf course next week, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to catch up with Liberty Head Men's Golf Coach Jeff Thomas.
The Flames travel to Aiken, S.C., to participate in the 2015 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, Liberty's first tournament in three weeks.
The Flames have participated in this event each of the last five seasons, including top five finishes four out of the last five years. Liberty has posted a 289.5 team stroke average the last five years at the course.
The 54-hole event, now in its 18th year of existence, will once again be contested at the historic Palmetto Golf Club (par 70, 6,671 yards). The two-day tournament will feature 36 holes of play on Monday, followed by a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
The Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 by Thomas Hitchcock, who started with four holes where the course's current practice range and No. 16, 17 and 18 holes currently stand. The course is recognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States.
The course was expanded to 18 holes in 1895 and has held tournaments that were won by golfing legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson.
