An early first half scoring run by Navy propelled the Midshipmen to a 21-6 victory over Liberty, Friday afternoon, at Liberty Lacrosse Field.
The Lady Flames fall to 0-2 on the year following the home setback. Navy improves to 2-0 on the season after opening the year with a 17-2 win over Longwood at home, last week.
Navy was quick to start from the first draw, netting the game's first goal just 1:35 into the game when Loren Generi notched her fourth goal of the season. During the course of the next nine minutes, the Midshipmen extended the lead to 4-0, including a pair of goals from Katie Gallagher.
The Lady Flames jumped on the board during the 13th minute when sophomore Michaela Rich netted her second goal of the season. Rich received a pass from Nina Dunay, breaking free from the defenders for a clear shot on net. Rich capitalized on the crisp pass to cut the four-goal deficit to three.
Dunay pulled Liberty back within striking distance after she notched her own goal, just 45 seconds after Rich's strike. The co-captain collected the ball off the ground and seized the opportunity for a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie. Dunay zipped the ball past Annie Foky, pulling Liberty within two, 4-2.
After a Navy timeout, the Midshipmen shifted the momentum back by scoring two more goals during the next four minutes, including Generi's second goal of the contest, to extend the lead back to four, 6-2.
Liberty clawed back to within three goals when Dunay capitalized on her second shot of the contest. The Ashburn, Va., native collected her second goal of the contest and third of the season to cut the Navy lead to 6-3.
The three-goal deficit was as close as the game would get as the Midshipmen netted six unanswered goals during the final nine minutes of the opening stanza to take a 12-3 halftime lead.
Navy began the second half the same way it ended the first half. They collecting eight consecutive strikes during the first 23 minutes of the half, including two more goals by Generi , the Midshipmen's leading scorer.
After falling behind 20-3, the Lady Flames scored three of the contest's final four goals during the final four minutes of play.
With 3:42 left on the clock, Courtney Brown notched an unassisted goal, her second on the young campaign.
Navy's Morgan Young capped off the scoring for the Midshipmen at the 1:48 mark, stretching the lead back to 17, 21-4.
Rich netted her second goal of the contest and third of the season with 1:21 left in the contest. Katy Pridemore recorded her team-leading third assist, setting up Rich for the chance at the goal. Rich's two goals marks the seventh multi-goal game of her young career.
With 16 ticks left on the clock, Pridemore connected on her own strike, netting her fourth goal of the season to cap off the scoring for the contest.
The Lady Flames were outshot 38-16 during the competition and trailed the Midshipmen 21-8 in draw controls.
Liberty won the battle in ground balls, corralling 17 ground balls to Navy's 14.
Juliann Elmer received her second career start in goal, turning away 13 shots to bring her season saves total to 27 through the first two games.
The Lady Flames return to action on Sunday, hosting the Vanderbilt Commodores. The contest is slated to begin at 12 p.m. at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
