Liberty women's tennis freshman Evangeline Crist has been named the CRONS Brand Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Big South Conference, for matches played from Jan. 12-18.
Crist, a native of Lilburn, Ga., earns her first Freshman of the Week honor. She is the first Lady Flame to earn the award since Maria Khval, who received the honor on April 1, 2014.
Crist recorded her first collegiate spring victory on Friday when she paired with Valerie Thong at the No. 2 doubles slot to defeat Catherine Martin and Mareli Sanchez of Wofford, 6-1. Crist backed up her doubles performance with a singles victory later that evening, defeating Sanchez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
On Sunday Crist had another strong performance, once again teaming up with Thong in doubles play to defeat Lynsey Cover and Tamara Jeremic of North Carolina Central, 6-1. Crist then defeated Cover in a singles match from the No. 4 spot, 6-0, 6-2.
"Evangeline has been playing well since the day she arrived in August and she picked up where she left off in the fall by controlling the points this weekend and remaining calm in pressure situations," commented head coach Jeff Maren. "Evangeline has more than earned this recognition."
The Freshman of the Week will look to help the Lady Flames remain undefeated this weekend in Miami, Fla., as they take on Florida International Sunday at noon. The Lady Flames return home on Jan. 31 when they host Charlotte and Villanova in a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
