Sixth-seeded High Point scored a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-17, 25-21) to upend No. 3 seed Liberty during a Big South Championship quarterfinal match, on Thursday at Coastal Carolina's The HTC Center.
With the win, the Panthers (13-15) advance to tomorrow's semifinals, where they will meet the winner of tonight's match between No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina and No. 7 seed Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. The Lady Flames' season comes to a close at 23-10, their seventh 20-win season in the last eight years. High Point and Liberty are 2-2 head-to-head all-time in Big South postseason play. The Panthers went 2-1 against the Lady Flames this season.
High Point outhit the Lady Flames, .282-.136 for the match, while holding a 53-43 advantage in digs and leading, 6-4 in aces. Both teams registered five blocks.
Redshirt junior Carolina Douglas led the Lady Flames with 11 kills, while junior Jade Vorster and senior Melissa Racz finished with six kills each. Junior Caila Stapleton dished out 23 assists, while classmate Haley Jeffcoat collected a team-best nine digs. Senior Gabrielle Shipe totaled four digs, finishing her career ranked third in program history with 1,708 career digs. High Point senior Kristin Heldt recorded a match-high 14 kills, while freshman Haley Barnes posted 10 kills. Redshirt junior Gabi Mirand registered match highs of 42 assists and five aces. Junior Wavie Chin collected a match-high 22 digs, while senior Chelsea Davis and freshman Camryn Freiberg totaled nine kills apiece. The Panthers raced ahead, 17-5, on the way to a 25-15 set-one victory. Liberty trimmed the deficit to seven, 21-14, following Douglas' fifth kill of the set. High Point outhit the Lady Flames, .484-.280, during the first set, as the Panthers recorded 20 kills. Davis and Barnes both registered five kills for High Point, while Douglas answered with five kills.
Trailing set two, 15-10, Liberty pulled to within four on a Stapleton-Jade Vorster block. Heldt recorded two kills during a four-point Panther run, giving her team a 19-11 advantage. High Point went on to take a 2-0 match lead, winning the second set, 25-17.
High Point held a .194-.000 edge in hitting percentage during the second session. Heldt led all players with six set-two kills.
The Panthers gained match point, 24-17, during the final frame after a kill by Savannah Angel. Douglas sent down a pair of kills, sparking a four-point Liberty run to draw within three, 24-21. Barnes then sealed the sweep for High Point, scoring the match-clinching kill, 25-21.
During the final session, High Point hit .220, compared to .159 for the Lady Flames. Douglas scored four kills for Liberty, while Freiberg and Heldt had four kills each.
