The Liberty men's tennis team received an ITA All-Academic Team mention, while four Flames were named to the 2014 ITA Scholar-Athlete team.
Liberty's men's tennis program, along with four of its players, have been recently recognized for their efforts in the classroom by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). "I am so proud of our guys! Their hard work has really paid off," commented head men's tennis coach Chris Johnson. "I would also like to say a special thanks to Kristie Beitz and her academic staff for helping in so many ways with this accomplishment. Their patience and dedication to our student athletes are vital to our success as a program." As a team, Liberty was one of 83 NCAA Division I men's tennis programs named to the 2014 ITA All-Academic Team. The listing is comprised of programs with a cumulative 3.20 or higher grade point average (GPA). This is the second time in the history of the men's tennis program Liberty has been named to the ITA All-Academic team listing and the first since the 2003 season. Liberty's men's tennis program finished the 2013-14 academic year with a 3.27 cumulative team GPA, which ranks as the highest among Liberty's NCAA Division I men's athletics programs. Additionally, Alejandro Llamas, Sergio Mourelo, Egon Samaai and Guillem Secanell were each named to the 2014 ITA Scholar-Athlete team. To be eligible for the ITA individual listing, a student-athlete must by a varsity letterwinner, have a 3.50 or higher GPA for the current academic year and have been enrolled at the institution for two semesters. This year's quartet gives Liberty six players in program history to be named to an ITA Scholar-Athlete team. In 2003, Ernesto Malagrino and Priit Pihl became the first-ever men's tennis players named to the listing. A total of 477 NCAA Division I men's tennis players were named to this year's ITA Scholar-Athlete team. A total 109 NCAA Division I men's tennis programs has multiple representatives on this year's ITA Scholar-Athlete team.
