Men's Tennis Season in Review

With the 2014 men's tennis season complete, Nick Pierce of the Liberty Flames Sports Network had a chance to sit down with head coach of the Liberty Flames, Chris Johnson.

During the interview, Johnson discusses the accomplishments of the team and the progress it made this year. Johnson also shares about the state of the program as it moves forward and prepares for the 2014-15 season.

Liberty finished the 2014 season with a 12-10 overall record and a 5-3 mark in Big South matches. The 12 wins marks the sixth consecutive season that the Flames have notched double-digit victories. The five league wins is the most in program history and is just the third season that Liberty has finished with a record above .500 in conference play.

Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero highlighted the season for the Flames, becoming the highest nationally ranked singles or doubles players in program or Big South history. Thomas and Azuero climbed to as high as No. 19 in doubles action in the ITA national poll. The duo earned Big South all-conference doubles honors as did Egon Samaai and Dillon Segur. At No. 2, Samaai and Segur had a team-best 12-5 ledger in doubles matches.

Thomas was tabbed to the all-conference singles squad for the second consecutive season, becoming the first player in Liberty history to earn all-conference singles and doubles plaudits in back-to-back seasons.

Thomas concluded the season with a 13-7 singles record to pace the Flames. The senior posted a 2-1 record against nationally ranked opponents. Thomas concludes his career as a Flame as the all-time leader in doubles wins and ranks second in all-time singles victories.
