Dawn Jeffs hit her third home run of the day and 10th of the year in Liberty's 4-3 victory over Hampton.

The Lady Flames plated four runs on five extra bases hits in the second inning, including two home runs, and withstood a late rally to down Hampton, 4-3, in Game 2 of the Blue Ridge Thunder Softball Tournament, Friday afternoon, at the Liberty Softball Field.

Earlier in the day, the Lady Flames defeated Georgetown, 10-1, to post a perfect 2-0 record after the first day's action at the two-day tournament. With the pair of victories, the Lady Flames raise their record to 19-14.

The Lady Flames took a four-run lead in the second inning, thanks to five hits. Claire Fridey and Dawn Jeffs both connected on solo home runs. Fridey's homer to left was her first of the year and second of her career, and Jeffs' was her 10th of the year and third of the day.

Extra bases continued to abound for Liberty as three-consecutive doubles by Shannon McKain, Jessica Moore and Ashley Williams plated two more runs to push Liberty's lead to four runs, 4-0.

The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning when the Pirates got on the scoreboard with one swing of the bat. Maggie Wolfe started the inning by drawing a walk and three batters later, Evelyn Garcia kept the inning alive with an infield single.

Hampton took advantage of the extra at bat as Angela Basler followed by connecting on her second home run of the year, a three-run shot over the scoreboard in center field, trimming Liberty's lead to one run, 4-3.

However, the Pirates' rally ended in the sixth as the starter Sarah Ellis was able to get Hampton to go down in order in the seventh to secure Liberty's fourth-straight victory. Ellis allowed three runs on six hits, adding two walks and striking out 10 in her team-leading eighth complete game of the year to up her record to 7-5.

Liberty finished the game with eight hits and Jeffs and Fridey accounted for half the hits. Jeffs was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, followed by Fridey's perfect 2-for-2 performance with a run and a RBI added as well.

The Lady Flames continue action at the Blue Ridge Thunder Softball Tournament tomorrow when they open the day at 9 a.m. against Georgetown, followed by a 1 p.m. game against Hampton.
