DeValve Spears Winthrop Invite Javelin Title

Liberty redshirt senior Jacob DeValve was the Flames' lone event victor on the final day of the Winthrop Invitational, claiming victory in the men's javelin on Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex.

Men's Day Two Recap
DeValve, who had finished as the shot put runner-up on Friday, recorded the three longest throws of Saturday's javelin competition. His very first javelin attempt of the 2014 outdoor season reached 182-7 and stood up as the best of the day.

DeValve was joined in the top 10 by teammates Zach Davis and Tevan McIntire. Davis stretched the tape to 165-3 for fourth place, while McIntire's 147-7 heave netted a ninth-place finish.

Redshirt sophomore David Scouten recorded his second personal best in as many days with a 167-5 mark in the discus. He finished second overall in the event and first among collegiate entrants. Scouten moves up to seventh place in program history.

Fellow Flame Tim Abbott's best discus throw of the day, a 154-10 effort, was good for sixth place in the event.

In addition to his javelin performance, Davis also tied for third place in the men's high jump competition. The freshman cleared an outdoor season-best 6-8.75.

On the track, freshman Ryan Davis posted a season-best 400 hurdles time of 54.69 seconds, winning his heat and placing third overall.

Women's Day Two Recap
Mary Echols continued her impressive sophomore season in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fourth on Saturday with a time of 1:04.07.

Fellow sophomore Christieanna Apon posted the fastest 800-meter time of her career by three seconds with her 2:18.28 clocking. She won her heat and came in sixth overall.

Freshman Erica Carney triple jumped 35-6 for seventh place in the event.

Liberty will divide its team once again this coming week. Most of the Flames and Lady Flames will compete in the first home meet of the 2014 outdoor season, the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, Friday and Saturday at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.

Meanwhile, a small group of distance runners will race at the prestigious Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
